Roadmap for Small and Emerging Contractors in San Diego County

Ground Floor—Look Before You Leap
Step 3. Read construction periodicals

Read construction periodicals to become familiar with the people, companies and issues in your area. The following can be found at public libraries or by subscription.
  • Contractor News & Views – local San Diego-based monthly packed with projects, contractor profiles, local political issues, training opportunities, and more. It’s free and worth reading. Log on to www.contractor-news.com or call Mike Caples, at (619) 286-6300, or write to 9921 Carmel Mountain Road #231, San Diego, CA 92129.
  • San Diego Daily Transcript – one of two local “legal notice” papers – the other being the San Diego Business Journal – and the one the construction community has traditionally gone to for notices of upcoming projects as well as construction and real estate news. For a free two-week trial subscription, call 800-697-NEWS or 619-232-4381. It is also available by subscription online at www.sddt.com. They also have a very strong Bid Plan Room online (for details see step #10).
  • Dodge “Green Sheet” – well-known national publication with ten regional “Construction Link” versions, lists private and public projects out for bid in California including the San Diego area. www.dodge.construction.com or 858-279-5330.
  • Engineering News Record – ENR – a national McGraw Hill publication, which by many is considered the “bible” of the industry. While only occasional San Diego projects, companies and issues are covered, ENR keeps you up-to-date with all the latest industry trends and news. You can also read it online at www.enr.com.
