Roadmap for Small and Emerging Contractors in San Diego County

second Floor—make the right moves
Step 5. Develop a business plan

Suggestion:  work with counselors in the San Diego Small Business Development & International Trade Center (www.sbditc.org) or Small
Business Development Center of North San Diego County (www.sandiegosmallbiz.com). Have your plan reviewed by knowledgeable, successful business people in your field and modify it based on their suggestions.

Here is a sample business plan outline:

  1. Executive Summary
  2. Company Description:  legal structure, vision and mission, location, products and services, history and past performance, growth opportunities

  3. Management Plan:  key personnel, board of directors, management team, management style

  4. Operating Plan:  staffing (including availability of skilled labor, recruitment strategy and your programs for training and staff evaluation), equipment and technology (including what you have vs. what you need), inventory, equipment and tools management, health and safety, information systems, accounting systems, insurance and risk management

  5. Marketing Plan:  industry analysis, target market, timing of market entry, customer profile, pricing, promotion and advertising, networking and public relations

  6. Financial Plan:  financial assumptions, cash flow statement, income and expense statement, balance sheet, ratio analyses, sources and use of capital
